Porch Birds

Porch Birds

part 1
The morning dew
crystal clear.
Scent of soup ‘n cider
fills the air.
What song shall I sing today?
There is oh so many
to choose.

Then comes a big, loud

*THUD!*

It was no rifle
It was no shot.
Peer out the window
a life has been lost.

Oh little bird
why did you fly to me?
Oh little bird
was my home inviting you in to see?

Your legs try to steer.
Your talons barely twinkle.
You fall asleep
as I stand awake.
Peacefully unawake on the porch.

part 2
My love arrives.
“Oh dear, you must take a look!
A bird came to our window
I’ve been so scared and shook!”

We peer through the glass.
“It’s not one, my sweet
there’s actually two!
They came to say hello,
but away their feathers flew.”

Good-bye little birds.
On the other side.
Good-bye little birds.
You’ve blessed me for a moment,
amongst this great divide.

Winter brings stillness.
Cold, grey skies have arrived.
Yet a tiny light
remains and shines.
As you fall asleep
and I stand awake.
Peacefully unawake on the porch.
